Introducing the Agile Manifesto Evolution:
A New Framework for the Future

In 2001, a group of software visionaries crafted the Agile Manifesto, transforming the way we approach development. Now, over two decades later, the world faces new challenges and opportunities. The Agile Manifesto Evolution seeks to build upon the original principles, offering a more comprehensive framework fit for today's interconnected and complex world.

Mission

What is the Agile Manifesto Evolution?

The Agile Manifesto Evolution maintains the original Agile Manifesto's core values of customer focus, adaptability, collaboration, and working solutions. However, it expands these principles in three crucial ways:

1. Accountable Awareness: Emphasizing the need for intentional, ethical actions, the Evolution encourages teams to establish "Defining Rules for Accountable Awareness." This ensures that agile practices are rooted in responsibility and conscious decision-making.

2. Sustainability and Impact: It prioritizes a sustainable approach and long-term impact. Moving beyond "output," the focus shifts to creating meaningful outcomes that benefit both customers and society.

3. Global and Future-Oriented Responsibility: The Evolution calls for responsible action towards our planet, communities, and future generations. This includes the ethical use and integration of artificial intelligence.

Key Changes in the Agile Manifesto Evolution

In addition to the broader focus, the Agile Manifesto Evolution updates and expands the foundational 12 principles. Here are some highlights:

  • "Tangible results are the primary measure of progress." Beyond functionality, the value and benefit of a solution are paramount.

  • "Continuous attention to excellence and thoughtful design enhances agility." Emphasizes quality and intentionality in design.

  • "Simplicity... is essential." Promotes streamlining to maximize efficiency and value.

  • Expanded principles on planetary care, community well-being, and responsible action for the future.

Why the Agile Manifesto Evolution Matters

The Agile Manifesto Evolution is a response to the growing complexity and interconnectedness of our world. It acknowledges the following:

  • Technology as a powerful force: Agile teams need to guide technology use with ethical considerations.

  • The need for a broader perspective: Projects must factor in sustainability and impact on society, not just short-term delivery.

  • Team empowerment with responsibility: Accountable Awareness promotes trust balanced with responsibility for actions.

Embracing the Agile Manifesto Evolution

The Agile Manifesto Evolution isn't a replacement of the original but an expansion. For teams ready to embrace a wider set of values, here's how to get started:

1. Study the Evolution: Review the principles and discuss how they resonate with your team's values.

2. Create 'Defining Rules for Accountable Awareness': Outline how your team will ensure ethical and conscious decisions.

3. Realign your priorities: Emphasize outcomes, sustainability, and broader responsibility without sacrificing agile values.
